Are you killing your brand?

So…Here we are folks… Over the last few months, I have noticed something over, over and over again that I just can’t ignore. I mean I really just can’t take it one minute longer. So… in this PR rant, I feel compelled to discuss how people and small businesses kill their own brand. It is actually murder, to be clear.

I will set the scene for you all. You have your own company, you don’t really know what you are doing but you hire a PR professional, a reputable firm that has 15 years plus experience… ahem… maybe one like my own, Wunderlich Inc. You would think HEY, they must know a little about what they are talking about, I mean that is why you hire them, or us. Right?

When us PR people sit down and tell you that the product needs to be re-worked, the price lowered, your logo redesigned, you need a new photoshoot, your website needs a total overhaul, or your social media needs to be amped up…LISTEN UP because we know what will sell and what wont. We know what works. We are in the trenches with the editors, talking about what they want to write about, talking to the bloggers everyday about what interests them for their blog and talking to the producers about what they want to put on their segments. We are hanging with with the top influencers and celebrities daily. So trust us, we know it all or just about almost all.

LET ME BREAK IT DOWN A LITTLE FURTHER:

If I am telling you that you have a name that doesn’t relate to what you are actually selling, doesn’t emulate what you are trying to do or the clientele you are trying to go for, that it is unpronounceable, or seems just made up, silly and random – the customers you are trying to reach will probably think so too. Editors will not want want to embarrass themselves by promoting such a product or even relating their name to it. Bloggers will not want to write about and producers will not feature it.

If im telling you that every single editor that goes on the website wont stay on for more then 15 seconds cause its too sloppy and too hard to navigate and you are getting no traction because its worthless then you need to listen… Contrary to everyones belief, we do not just talk to hear our own voices. We are saying it for a reason. Trust me, I don’t want to have to stop pitching or scouting new business to tell a client this. It sucks, we know it! But we want to help because building brands is in our blood!

If I am telling you that you need a new photo shoot because your photo’s do not evoke emotion or tell the story of your brand or do nothing for you and that no one will look past the pictures when we pitch it do you think we are making this up? Most likely we ARE your customer and we read and watch the media YOU want to be in. Do you think the editors of Vogue or Allure want to feature a product that looks like it was photographed out of Kentucky, middle-of-no where.com (No Offense Kentucky) or taken on your cell phone and can not see ANY detail? No, they want GLAM, not to say Vogue is everyones dream placement, but for someone who Vogue is… You need to LOOK like Vogue. We tell you this because we want your product to look the best that it can…and sell. We want to make you MONEY! Hello! Don’t you want that too? AND.. Let’s really face it, you don’t make money, there’s only so long you will give US money.

If I am telling you that your social media needs an overhaul, specific strategy, targeted blogger outreach and buzz campaign and not having your 19 year old intern tweeting for you, LISTEN UP. Do you want to raise awareness and drive more traffic to your site?

Do you think we tell you this for our own benefit? NO! You are SABOTAGING yourself. Help me to help you. This is what we are here for, this is what we do, this is what we love.

We take clients on because we believe in the brand and we believe it can sell better with a tweak here or there, but without the client taking advice, there is only so much we can do. Look at Richard Branson, his key to success is that he hires the RIGHT people for the RIGHT positions so the job can get done RIGHT. He knows he is not an expert in all things but is a manager of great people and their outstanding resources and capabilities.

After all, why did you hire us? And lastly, guess who the first person to call us when their brand doesn’t make THE NEW YORK TIMES and THE TODAY SHOW declines to cover your brand. Shocking! Hate to say I told you so… but… I TOLD YOU SO!

Written by Gwen and the girls @ Wunderlich Inc, - in hopes that we’ve opened your eyes and appreciate all the things that all us PR people have to deal with everyday to make your brand famous…xoxoxo

Youth

Youth… It’s a funny little thing isn’t it? Youth, A time to do everything you’ll ever do without caring about the consequences, the jump in the lake you’re willing to take because you don’t even see a possibility of harm, that hill on your 10 speed you swear you can jump because Tommy did it before you on his BMX and yours is bigger and shiner and newer anyways… The first kiss you dared to go in for because it so purely innocent it was just meant to be, and that song you belted out during your talent show that got all the crowd jumping for joy even though you could barely sing… Yeah… those were the days. These are the things that we all did when we were younger because we had no fear and we didn’t know better or had anyone show us videos of possible disaster and failure.  While I am so thankful and happy I can say today I live a regret free life, it really got me thinking… can today’s youth really say the same?

Earlier today on a walk across 34th street, a passing bus advertisement caught my attention, a super skinny 13 year old in a sultry pose, styled to the max and I got to thinking, “Damn! When I was 13 I just started experimenting with tri color (aqua green, fuchsia and purple eye shadow if u can imagine) and my idea of looking really pretty for the cute boy I liked in school was teasing my hair and wearing 3 layers of those bunchy socks with clean Keds”. Better believe that I raced with the boys down the hills to jump in the Yaphank Lake via tire swing, fearless and confident, because hey, if the boys can do it, I can do it to… I played sports outside, and if I had issues inside of school that’s where it stayed. I didn’t have to worry about coming home and checking my Facebook page or twitter account to see if the daily occurrences were reported for all to see. I didn’t know what exactly I wanted to be when I grew up because there was no internet access for me to look up options. I didn’t get teased, poked and bullied on social media platforms and I certainly couldn’t go home and Google the answer to every one of life’s quandaries as I pleased.

And at the end of the day, for every accomplishment and life goal it’s the journey that’s the best part, it’s the funniest, the saddest, and the craziest parts, which eventually define, lift, shape and mold you into the person you’re destined to be.

So I think the real question here is - with having an all access pass to every bit of information and the “what-if’s” handed to them on a silver platter, won’t they be missing out on the really big “wow” of it all, a little thing called life experience? Will the fact that they are learning everything faster, harder, quicker really benefit them at all? Or will this generation short circuit with information overload by the time they hit their 40’s and we are left with a society of stressed, uninviting, undefinable people with undesirable social skills that know how to text, tweet and Facebook better than they know how to take their long faithful leaps in the short journey of life?  You tell me.

I will leave you with a picture of little ol’ me from my youth. Wasn’t I cute?

Commuting

So, here I am headed home on the Long Island Railroad after 8pm. Stale chicken wrap in bag and Oprah mag on my lap and all. Oh yeah, and I can’t forget the stress induced back pain from the hell of a day I’ve had. The only thing I can think about is “Am I really fucking doing this?”, Commuting that is…

My bestie Nicole and I started commuting to the city for work at the tender age of 17. This was when the big city, monster lights and action packed fun reigned! Back then, it was me picking her up late every morning and racing in my lil Hyundai to the train with six minutes to spare. The breakfast of choice back then was a low-fat blueberry muffin and our newly discovered coffee with skim milk. We could have been fed dog food and wouldn’t have even noticed because boy were we the happiest little gossipy campers on that train. We were two teens gabbing non-stop for an hour, we must have drove those older folks BANANAS!

It was all sunshine and puppies until right around month 3, where the commute then began to suck. After work filled days and nights at happy hour with our new found city friends, it sucked a lil harder with each passing train. I vowed to get the hell out of the burbs and never to return! I was planning my stake in the NYC real estate market! And so I did, Hello NYC apartments and big offices. I even tried out other boroughs and NOW here I am, an adult married with a dog and a house in the burbs talking the train and doing the very same shit I VOWED to never do again. Commute from Long Island (where this time, I chose to come live again)!

Currently I’m  squished next to this fat Asian guy in a vintage LIRR car with annoyed people who can’t believe they are doing the same thing that I am, commuting.

Funny…Now that I just let it all out I’m feeling a lil bit happier!

What’s your story? Is it worse than mine?

2012 New Year’s Resolutions? Almost…

Oh, 2011 you’ve been sweet but 2012 is going to be the best yet!

Everyone says that next year will be the best yet but I REALLY know it and how do I know this, you ask?

Well, because in all of my 36 years of life, I have never known myself better. In knowing myself, I know what I will, and will not tolerate or accept! This my friends, is the REAL key to happiness and freedom. So much so, that on just the very last day of 2011, I let my final “exception” go and man, do I feel brand new! A clean slate- nothing but beaming positivity and prosperity coming my way and that’s truly how I feel!

I mean think about it, a client speaks badly to you and you stay, thinking that you need the money (You don’t! If you are good at what you do more will come-trust me on this one!). We all know this one and can relate, You have been friends with someone for so long, yet, yeah, they kind of drag me down and don’t bring anything to the friendship table and haven’t for years (let them go, people change and some stay stuck right where you found them in the first place), your family fights with you at every holiday dinner or they bore you to immediatly stage 4 of REM sleep right there at the dinner table year after year( be done with it and start your own family tradition). How about this one, you are always the gracious giver and surround yourself with takers, sound familiar? I bet it does! Well you get it and its ENOUGH!

You have one and only one life- now grab it by the bal… errrr…horns (trying to make this PC over here!) and live your life how you want to live it. NOT, how others want you to live it. Forget about being affected- you are stronger than that. You know who you are, what you want and how you want people to treat you and don’t EVER waiver from that again. I guarantee that you’ll see a new sense of calm take over your life  -YOU WILL INDEED garner up the strength to do anything and everything you want for your new year and new life!

So while I’m still in the planning stages of my resolutions, I will tell you this, I plan on living it up in 2012 and becoming who I am really destined to be and I hope you will too!

I can feel it… can you?

To Party or Not To Party…

So here we go again… It’s New Years eve 2011 and here I am having the everlasting debate in my head (well since I turned thirty, 6 years ago) to party or not to party for New Years Eve.

There so much hype and damn that pressure- and its not that you don’t know better. It’s just like high anxiety about whether or not you want to ring in the new year on the couch and then feel cheated thinking so THIS is how the New Year’s going to start! Or better yet, on vacation which, um yeah, would have been nice but didn’t happen! Or at an over priced dinner, that never seems to make sense considering you paid a quarter of the price the week before and now for an extra 250 buckaroos you got a party hat, noisemakers and a glass of champagne that you know is really the cheap kind! Phew- I said that all in one breath!

And lastly we have the dare I say it… THE NIGHTCLUB, which I’m pretty much done with because, let’s face it, that dancing with your husband in 5 inch heels and a tight dress and not that drunk because you have to drive home (plus you feel dumb because everyone is in their 20’s) feeling… yeah not so much!

So those are the options. Sure, I could have a party at my house but who feels like cleaning and prepping when I’m already exhausted from work? I want action, adventure, extraodinary without putting in the effort or putting on heels actually! Is this toooo much to ask?

My head is calling me a fool for not being in Turks with a midnight beachside bonfire, my body is calling for the couch, and my friends want to fist pump with Pauly D… Needless to say the outcome should be interesting…and let’s hope not lame.com

Life of an overworked entrepreneur…

Be careful what you wish for they say…Well, I wished for lots of great new business last month and yep! I got it alright!

Actually the workload is so massive that no one in the office can even take off for the holidays or new years. That being said pale, pasty and overworked, we march on… in dire need of an end of year vacay!

Sure I bitch, we eyeroll, swear and talk about how exhauuusssssted we are, but we wouldn’t, or let me re-phrase that, at least I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Why u ask?

Because we work hard and play even harder!  A 14 hour work day? Sure! But along with our never-ending work day we have our 4pm dance parties or our 3pm prank calls which have us laughing for hours! Oh yeah, we also have our Margarita’s and our pitchers of Sangria at 10 pm, so its needless to say, you just gotta laugh your way through so you don’t cry of exhaustion.

Signing off with one more tidbit of information, Vegas in 12 days for CES (Consumer Electronic Show for those of you that aren’t in the know)! All I have to say is that those cops better be ready because its about to get wild!!!!

Wooop woopppppp - the life of doing what I love to do continues!
